Bank walkway becomes begging hotspot as numbers grow

By Aida Aziz

TAIPING: The number of people seeking alms along the walkway outside a bank on Jalan Medan Saujana in Kamunting has been growing, with several individuals reportedly gathering there.

A complainant said some of them included a man in a wheelchair, while others sat cross-legged directly in front of the bank entrance or slept along the walkway used by customers.

The complainant, who identified himself as Shaari, said the number of beggars usually increased during public holidays, while on working days, the man in the wheelchair was typically the only one seen there.

“I have been observing the presence of beggars at this bank for a long time, and their numbers have been increasing. Some also ask for donations for orphans and other causes.

“Their presence sometimes creates a negative impression of the surrounding area, with two or three men sitting directly in front of the entrance and placing money containers along the walkway.

“The relevant authorities, including the Social Welfare Department (JKM), local authorities (PBT) and other agencies, should monitor the situation.

“We do not want these individuals to target strategic locations or hotspots to collect cash from the public. Their backgrounds should be checked to prevent possible scams,” he said.

Meanwhile, another individual, identified as Natrah, called on the relevant authorities to monitor and patrol known begging hotspots more frequently.

“If they are genuinely struggling and need assistance, I hope JKM or the relevant authorities will assess their needs and determine what help can be provided.

“If the issue is left unchecked, it could become increasingly widespread. If there are elements of exploitation or fraud, appropriate action should be taken against those involved,” she said.
