By Zaki Salleh

IPOH: Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) continues to strengthen its role as the nation’s maritime TVET reference centre through collaborations with two private companies and two government agencies.

The event was organised by the Department of Marine Engineering through the Centre of Technology in Marine Engineering (CTME) and the Malaysia Marine Engineering Technology TVET Collaboration Hub (MarETech).

The collaboration involves Orkim Berhad and Pelita Akademi Sdn. Bhd. as industry representatives, while Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah Fisheries College and the Malaysia Fisheries Academy under the Department of Fisheries represent government agencies.

This development is regarded as a strategic step in enhancing training, research, and competency development in the field of marine engineering.

To expand industrial training opportunities, PUO also received the placement of six Bachelor of Marine Engineering students under the Work Based Learning (WBL) programme with Orkim Berhad.

The programme, which is based on real working experience, provides students with opportunities to sharpen practical skills in line with the evolving needs of the maritime industry.

PUO Director, Dr. Hajah Salmi Che Meh, said the collaboration will serve as a catalyst for a more sustainable maritime TVET ecosystem.

“With the combined expertise of industry players and government agencies, PUO is confident that we can produce graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also competent and ready to face the challenges of the dynamic maritime sector.

“This aligns with our vision of becoming an internationally recognised centre of excellence in TVET,” she said.

PUO reaffirmed its commitment to leading the development of a highly skilled workforce to meet the needs of the nation’s maritime sector.
