IPOH – As Malaysians celebrate the National Month, people are expressing their patriotism in various meaningful ways.
For barber Selvaraj Murugan, better known as Raj, the occasion will be marked by offering free haircuts to the public on August 8.
The programme will take place from 9.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. at his shop located at No. 12, Gerai Gunting Rambut, Persiaran Bijih Timah, Ipoh.
His shop is one of the few traditional barbershops that continues to operate in the city.
In addition to free haircuts, Raj will also provide complimentary meals to customers who attend the event.
He said the initiative is a gesture of appreciation to the community while fostering the spirit of patriotism among Malaysians.
Raj hopes the programme will strengthen community ties and inspire the spirit of independence through the values of sharing and serving others.
Speaking about his shop, Raj said the barbershop, which is about 50 years old, is one of the surviving traditional businesses in Ipoh, established long before the emergence of modern air-conditioned salons.
It is understood that the row of wooden shop lots was opened in 1974, with its official opening officiated by Dato’ Seri S.P. Seenivasagam during his tenure as the Mayor of Ipoh.
