About Lasik

Ipoh Echo spoke to Yap Siew Fong, a 37-year-old lady, who underwent the Femto LASIK laser surgery back in February 2010.

“Before the treatment, I was extremely short-sighted since I was 5 years old. I have a thin cornea thus I could not see very distant objects. My lens power was very high (-13.00D). It hindered my participation in sports such as swimming or playing badminton. Plus, my eyes felt strained all the time and my spectacles felt heavy,” Yap said.

Dr Lee Mun Toong, consultant eye specialist surgeon at KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, performed the procedure on her in Feb 2010.

“I was amazed that the laser treatment lasted only for a few seconds and it was almost painless as well as blade-less. After screening my eye, I was ready for the treatment. There was no long a waiting list so it was done the next day. Post-surgery, there were a few free of charge follow-up treatments to check on my eye for my recovery process,” Yap explained. The eye screening process was also free of charge as well.

Before the existence of Femto LASIK, the older procedure uses the conventional blade and it drove away patients due to their fear of prickling pain, slower recovery and possibility flap complication. With Femto LASIK coming into KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, it has been drawing in a steady increase of patients opting for the procedure thanks to its attractive aspects of being almost painless and patients can say goodbye to their spectacles immediately post-procedure for most cases.

With her now corrected vision over the past 7 years, Yap does not need to put on spectacles anymore which is a great convenience. “I can do everything now!” she shared.

What does it feel like undergoing the Femto LASIK for the first time and being completely awake throughout the whole procedure? This is what Yap had to say: “Initially, I was nervous, facing all these modern machines. But it was done really fast and smoothly. During that day, (also my birthday!) Dr Lee was a comforting presence and the team did their best to assist me.

“I trust and have confidence in Dr Lee. Hence, I would definitely recommend him to my family and friends,” she concluded.

Femto LASIK costs RM2999 per eye.
