Three Months of Free Electricity

Some 7.66 million domestic electrical consumers will receive discounts and rebates on their bills from the Bantuan Prihatin Elektrik (BPE) Tambahan (Additional Electrical Supply Assistance) announced by the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

In a statement by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Dato’ Dr Shamsul Anuar, it is an initiative by the federal government in handling citizens’ complaints of electrical bills increment during the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“This is on top of existing discounts on electrical bills under BPE which have been executed since April 1, and additional discounts will be reflected from July onwards,” he said. “Besides that, around 4 million consumers with monthly bills amounting to less than RM77 or its equivalent of less than 300 kilowatt-hour would enjoy free electricity for the months of April, May and June.”

He added that the government has agreed to halt all electricity supply cuts until September 30 to assist those who are having difficulties making ends meet.

“BPE is funded by the federal government via the Kumpulan Wang Industri Elektrik (KWIE) fund, Ministry of Finance and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB),” Shamsul stated. “Hopefully, the newest BPE will receive a warm welcome by all walks of life.”
