After the success of the statewide 26 Million Tree Planting Campaign from 2010 till 2014, the government is currently implementing the Greening of Malaysia Programme (PPM) via the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign nationwide.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Saarani Mohamad explained that the PPM is an effort to preserve and protect forests under the 12th Malaysian Plan running on the theme, “Greening Malaysia: Our Tree, Our Life”.
“The Greening of Malaysia Agenda is continued with the hope to reduce the impact of global warming which is affecting the whole world,” he told the media after officiating the state-level 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign at Kledang Saiong Forest Eco Park at Bandar Meru Raya today (December 28).
Besides Malaysia, other parts of the world also see the implementation of the greening agenda, such as the One Billion Trees Programme in Australia, the 50 Million Tree Programme in Canada, the 220 Million Tree Planting in One Day Programme in India and the One Billion Trees Programme in New Zealand among other initiatives.
In effect from 2021 till 2025, the 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign is aimed to retain the greenery in the nation besides preserving and conserving the forest areas.
According to Dato’ Saarani, it instills love for a natural environment besides increasing public awareness on the importance of forests and trees.
“We aim to ensure that the nation’s commitment to retain at least 50 percent of its forest areas is achieved. We also encourage the participation of federal and state government agencies, private and corporate bodies, non-governmental organisations, educational and research institutions, as well as members of the public in the tree-planting effort.
Meanwhile, the national-level Greening of Malaysia Agenda is set to be launched by the Prime Minister on January 5, 2021 at Taman Rimba Alam in Putrajaya.
