Letter: Unity for the New Year

The year is about to draw to a close and it has been a turbulent year for most due to the COVID-19 pandemic which has affected lives and livelihoods.

We are facing unprecedented times and uncertainty is still the name of the game, and yet I still read on social media of words of hatred being exchanged during heated conversations and topics.

I would like to humbly urge everyone to not treat social media as a platform for sowing the seeds of disharmony. Free speech is not to be abused in this manner. Treat each other with respect and be mindful of your words.

It is not wrong to speak your mind, but please do so in a respectful and kind manner. Please remember that we are all equals and no one should ever think otherwise.

Be humble, modest and kind in your speech and actions. Do not go overboard as no one deserves to be on the receiving end of harsh, rude and at times downright evil words.

Adopting a positive mindset will go far in making someone else’s day, even further than you can imagine.

Let me remind you that the nation’s battle against the COVID -19 pandemic is far from over. Let us all band together as children of Malaysia and display unity for the sake of everyone and more so our frontliners, who are battling tooth and nail to keep us safe.

As we reflect on the year that was and welcome the New Year. Let the spirit of Malaysian unity serve as guiding light for a renewed and strengthened sense of hope and togetherness.
