Taiping Bird Week 2021 Highlights Uniqueness of the Heritage Town

The bird photography contest organised by the Taiping Municipal Council (MPT) successfully highlighted photography talents and promoted the sharing of information among the local community.

According to the Yang Di-Pertua of MPT, Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir, the competition was held for the second time in conjunction with the Taiping Bird Week 2021 (TBW) programme.

“The first was held in 2017. At the time, the response was overwhelming, especially from participants made up of nature lovers and bird lovers.

“Activities related to bird watching not only benefited the participants, but the public also had the chance to exchange knowledge throughout the programme from October 1 till 7.

TBW is a tourism event featuring the love for nature, flora and fauna. It also promotes the same enthusiasm in the minds of the people, especially photography participants,” he said after the virtual closing ceremony of TBW 2021 held recently.

Yoong Beng Wah from Taiping emerged champion, bringing home a Sony Alpha A 6600 Mirrorless digital camera, E70- 355MM lens, cash prize of RM1,000 and a certificate.

Second place went to Wee Gek Sim from Pulau Pinang who received RM750 and a certificate. Meanwhile, third place was won by Hee Chee San from Ipoh. Hee received RM500 and a certificate.

There were 10 consolation prizes of RM200 and certificates.

According to Khairul Amir, the various geographical features of Larut Matang district enable it to be a breeding habitat of three types of birds: burung pantai, burung tanah rendah and burung tanah tinggi.

“Besides that, there are many rare species of birds which have become the permanent residents of Taiping, especially at the Taman Tasik Taiping and Bukit Larut. Among the species are Enggang Badak, Longtailed Parakeet, Cattle Egret and the Hudhud.

The birding activity is set to be another attraction here, allowing Taiping and Larut Matang to be part of the birding circuit of Malaysia and potentially even at international level in the future.
