Wild Elephant Caught in Gerik

A wild elephant was caught by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) in Kampung Padang Lalang Umbut, Gerik last Sunday.

The male elephant was captured by the Perak Elephant Capture Unit at 10am.

Executive Councilor for Health, Science, Environment and Green Technology, Mohd Akmal Kamaruddin said the operation was following a complaint that this elephant was causing disturbance since last April.

“Complaints have been received since the end of April in the areas of Kampung Padang Lalang, Umbut and Kampung Bongor.

“This elephant is an elephant from Temenggor and it is estimated that there are five to six of them,” he said through a post on his Facebook page.

This male elephant is estimated to be between 25 to 27 years old and weighs in at 2.5 tons.

According to Mohd. Akmal, the elephant is currently in a healthy and stable condition.

“We will be monitoring this situation until the transfer process is complete.
