Samy Vellu Passed Away

Former Minister of Works, Tun S. Samy Vellu who was also a Member of Parliament for Sungai Siput died early this morning.

The former MIC President died at his residence in the capital at the age of 86.

Former MIC President, Datuk Seri Dr S Subramaniam, confirmed the matter in a statement on Facebook.

“With sadness and pain, I have received the tragic news of the passing of Tun Samy Vellu, former MIC President and legendary minister in the Malaysian Cabinet from his son Datuk Seri Vell Paari,” he said.

Samy Vellu led MIC for 31 years from 1979 to 2010, besides being one of the longest-serving Cabinet ministers for 29 years.

He was appointed as Minister of Works from 1983 to 1989 and 1995 to 2008 while also being a Member of Parliament for Sungai Siput for 34 years (1974 – 2008).

The deceased led many services and contributions, especially in the aspects of road management and infrastructure related to the Public Works Department.

It can be said that the speed of construction of good road networks in the state of Perak such as the Ipoh – Lumut highway, the Ipoh – Kuala Lumpur two lane road and the Sungai Siput road was paved by him when he led the Ministry of Works.

The passing of the deceased is a great loss for the community and the country.
