A Walkathon to raise funds for the care and support of patients with Parkinson’s and their caretakers, as well as to raise awareness for the disease was held at Ecopark 1, Bandar Seri Botani this morning, with the walk starting at approximately 7am.
Due to the MCO in 2020, the Perak Parkinson’s Association (PPA) have had to scale back their fundraising activities and largely depended on donations and their annual service subscription of just RM24, to cover the RM50,000 yearly expenses for their centre. This Walkathon was integral in helping the association to raise funds, so that they can focus on doing what they do best, which is the caring for and serving of the Parkinson affected community in Perak and the less fortunate.
Today’s walkathon event which attracted more than 600 participants was graced by the newly minted Member Of Parliament for Ipoh Timur, Yang Berhormat (YB) Howard Lee Chuan How, Member of Perak State Legislative Assembly for Canning, YB Jenny Choy Tsi Jen, Event Chairperson and Association treasurer, Mr. Steven Leong and Association president Chris Chai.
Also present were Association vice president, Mr. Chooi Yiew Kheong, secretary Cindy Chan Mui Kuei and vice secretary Yeoh Lam Swee.
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological disease that breaks down certain cells in the nervous system which results in the characteristic symptoms.
World Parkinson’s Day (WPD) is observed across the globe on April 11 every year, marking the birthday of James Parkinson in 1755. He was the one who published ‘An Essay on the Shaking Palsy’ in 1817, which established Parkinson’s as a recognised medical condition. Over two hundred years later, there is still no cure for the condition.
