Man under influence of drugs acted aggressively; threatened family with machete

HUTAN MELINTANG: A 44-year-old man who was under the influence of drugs was reported to have acted aggressively towards his family members in the Hutan Melintang area yesterday morning.

Perak Police Chief, Datuk Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said, the police from the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (BSJN) of the Hilir Perak District Police Headquarters (IPD) received a report regarding the case from one of the family members at about 10 am.

He said, acting on the information a team of police officers rushed to the scene to provide help.

“On arrival at the location, the police tried to persuade the suspect to cooperate, but he refused and acted aggressively.

“The suspect then threatened to cut and injure his 72-year-old mother. The suspect also placed the machete on the victim’s neck and demanded that the police leave,” he said in a statement today.

Mohd Yusri said that, worried about the victim’s safety, the police tried their best to persuade the suspect to calm down, but the suspect hugged the victim while pointing a machete and scissors at the victim.

“The police have carefully cut the lattice door that was locked from the inside by the suspect, using an iron cutter.

“Realizing that the police managed to enter, the suspect then pushed the victim until she fell and passed out and threw a fan while swinging a machete at the police who tried to arrest him.

“Due to the life threatening factor faced by the police, one shot was fired at the suspect and hit him in the left shoulder. The suspect fell to the floor and the victim was rescued,” he said.

He said the police called an ambulance to the scene to help the suspect and the injured victim, but the suspect was confirmed dead by the medical team upon arrival at the scene.

According to him, the autopsy on the suspect was conducted at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital today and further investigations are still ongoing and the case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code (attempted murder) and sudden death (SDR).
