By Zaki Salleh

TANJUNG MALIM: The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, officially inaugurated Gerbang Suria at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI), the first open hall in Malaysia powered by a solar energy system.

Also in attendance was the Raja Permaisuri of Perak, Tuanku Zara Salim.

Gerbang Suria is more than just a physical structure; it represents a green aspiration inspired by the vision of His Majesty.

It was conceptualized with the expertise of UPSI researchers, in strategic collaboration with Synergy Generated and UPSI Holdings Sdn. Bhd.

Covering more than 12,500 square feet, it symbolizes UPSI’s commitment to addressing future challenges through sustainable innovation.

This initiative directly contributes to reducing carbon emissions by 2,800 tons annually, construction cost savings of up to RM5 million, annual electricity bill savings of around RM2 million, and income generation through various events and programs.

The event also saw the exchange of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UPSI, the Darul Ridzuan Institute, and the Singapore University of Social Sciences.

This marks a new chapter in collaboration across research, education, care economy, and sustainable development.
