JCI Ipoh’s 520.3 Charity Event Rides Back In

by KT Leong

Following last year’s positive response, Junior Chambers International (JCI) Ipoh’s 520 charity event is coming back for the third time. As with last year, this year’s 520.3 Charity Ride will be a fun filled day, interacting with horses in assorted activities.

520.3 Charity Ride will be held on 17 May, from 9 am to 12 pm, at the Iskandar Polo Club. This event will not only raise funds in support of orphaned children in need, but bring them some joy, as they get the experience of being around horses.

The three orphanages to benefit this time around are:

  1. Persatuan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Kasih Sayang Ipoh
  2. Ipoh Salvation Army (Boys & Girls)
  3. Persatuan Kebajikan Kanak-Kanak Berjasa Kinta, Perak

Persatuan Kebajikan Anak-Anak Kasih Sayang Ipoh

This home was established over 10 years ago and primarily supports children from single-parent Indian families. For the past 7 years, a kind-hearted sponsor, a generous gentleman, fully covered their monthly rent and utility bills. Sadly, he passed away 2 years ago, and since then, the home has struggled with cash flow due to high monthly expenses.

Their biggest financial commitments are monthly rental and utility bills, which have now been overdue for more than 4 months. They are actively seeking external support to help cover these essential costs and stabilise their operations.

In addition, the home urgently requires sponsorship for diapers and milk powder to care for the babies currently under their supervision.

JCI Ipoh is targeting 25 pax children homed there.

Ipoh Salvation Army (Boys & Girls)

The majority of the children here come from Chinese, Indian, and Orang Asli backgrounds, reflecting a diverse and multicultural community.

During the Movement Control Order (MCO) period, the orphanage received generous support from kind sponsors and donors, which helped cover utilities and daily necessities.

However, post-MCO, they have faced increasing challenges in fundraising. Rising daily expenses, particularly education-related costs such as school fees, have placed a significant strain on their operations.

JCI Ipoh is targeting 50 pax children and 3 caretakers for them.

JCI Ipoh’s proposed support will focus on 20 children and the 3 caretakers who are responsible for their daily care and development. One of their most pressing needs is funding for a van to provide reliable transportation. This vehicle would allow them to safely bring the children to school and outdoor activities, contributing to their overall growth and well-being.

In addition, there is an ongoing need for essential supplies, particularly diapers and milk powder, to meet the daily needs of the babies in their care. These basic necessities are crucial for ensuring the health and comfort of the youngest children.

In addition to the Charity Ticket of RM80, which will provide such benefits as riding the horses and feeding and showering the horses, becoming an event sponsor will also be possible and will include assorted benefits.

JCI Ipoh’s 520 charity event was originally championed by their late Past President, Wiliam Hong, who passed away at just age 33. He worked to make the first 520 event a success, despite medical issues. The first event was held on May 20, hence the name 520, which also phonetically resembles the phrase “WǑ ÀI NǏ” ( 我 爱 你 ), which translates to “I love you”.
