Clash of Young Titans: National School Rugby Teams Battle for Glory

By Owen Lee

Ipoh based Tuanku Abdul Rahman School (STAR) put on a powerful performance in front of a home crowd as they defeated Sultan Mohamad Jiwa Science School (SMad Jiwa) 22-10 in the Malaysian Super Schools Rugby Championship match held at STAR’s field.

The match was a fierce contest, with both teams showing strong determination and discipline on the pitch. Despite a light drizzle during the game, a large crowd of supporters turned out to cheer, undeterred by the weather. The victory secured STAR’s place in the next round of the competition.

This latest win adds to STAR’s impressive group-stage run, following earlier victories against Sultan Yahya Petra 1 School (34-0) and Selangor Science Secondary School (SMSS) (24-21).

Among the spectators was Mohd. Shukri bin Nazri, the father of STAR player Mohd Suffian (#16). “I always support my son, whether it’s with time, money, or whatever he needs for the game,” he said. “I’m very proud of his performance and the team’s victory.”

Adam Rayyan, 17, was named for the Player of the Match with his good performance on the field. Reflecting on the game, Adam admitted there were areas to improve. “We made a few simple mistakes during the match, but we’re working on them and will train harder to avoid them in the next round,” he said.

STAR School Rugby Team coach, Mohd Khairol Azhar bin Md Noor, 44, said that the overall performance of the team is below their true ability. He believed that it might be because mid-year exam season is coming and causing them  to lose focus on the game.

Still, Khairol expressed satisfaction with the outcome. “I’m grateful we managed to become the group champions, and my hope is to guide the team all the way to the Super Schools Rugby final.”

Principle of STAR, Tuan Haji Mohd Saharuddin bin Sadali, (Front Second from left) & Senior Assistant School Administration of STAR, Shahnun bin Abdul Ghani (Front Second from right) are watching the match.

The STAR rugby team now looks ahead with optimism, backed by strong community support, committed players, and a coach determined to lead them to greater heights.
