The Michaelian Military Band (MMB) is celebrating its 65th year with a full-scale concert that joins alumni and current students in one powerful performance.

Taking place on 5 and 6 July 2025 at SMK St. Michael Hall, Echoes of Tradition promises a vibrant two-hour showcase of classical, cinematic and contemporary music performed with precision and energy.

A historic snapshot of the MMB in full regalia (A golden era of discipline and sound).

MMB began in 1960 under Brother Patrick O’Donovan, making it one of Ipoh’s longest-running school bands. It built a strong reputation early on as a disciplined and high-performing ensemble.

Since then, it has played a major role in school life at SMK St. Michael alongside Scouts, Cadets and other groups.

What history lovers will appreciate is that the band was thriving by the late 1960s and already noted as a popular presence at school events. Over the years, it has marched in town parades, performed for official functions and even appeared in a 2014 Petronas video celebrating national unity with period uniforms and a rural Perak backdrop.

This year’s concert is especially significant. For the first time ever, former band members from different generations will take the stage alongside current students. The result is a fusion of legacy, talent and passion that reflects 65 years of musical growth.

The programme includes a powerful mix of music that spans genres and generations. Expect the thunderous energy of Ross Roy, the cinematic emotion of Cinema Paradiso, crowd favourites from Guardians of the Galaxy, a lively Animation Medley, and more. Whether you’re a fan of classical pieces or pop culture hits, this is a concert designed for everyone.

Behind this show is months of preparation. Students and alumni have been rehearsing intensely, some travelling from out of town just to take part. It’s a concert built on pride, effort and deep connection.

Ticket proceeds support the band’s operations including training, instrument upkeep and future performance opportunities. Your seat in the audience helps sustain one of Ipoh’s most enduring youth music programmes.

Aaron Chin  ~ a dedicated music teacher, saxophonist and conductor. He now leads the Michaelian Military Band into its next chapter.

“Celebrating 65 years of music-making is both a privilege and a joy. This concert is a tribute to the generations of musicians, educators and supporters who have shaped MMB’s legacy. As we honour the past, we’re excited for what’s ahead! Don’t miss the show.”  ~ Aaron Chin, Band Director
