IPOH: Ipoh residents have reason to celebrate as Ipoh City Council (MBI) has become the only local authority in the northern region to receive the Level 2 Smart City Rating Award, recognising it as a Developing Smart City.
The rating was presented in conjunction with the 2026 National World Town Planning Day (HPBS) celebration.
According to MBI, the achievement reflects its continued commitment to strengthening smart city governance, adopting technology and innovation, and improving the efficiency of service delivery to Ipoh residents.
The recognition was presented by Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Aiman Athirah Sabu to Ipoh Mayor Zamakhshari Hanipah at a ceremony held at the Petaling Jaya City Council Civic Hall in Selangor.
The ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The event also witnessed the launch of the Fifth National Physical Plan and the Third National Urbanisation Policy by the Prime Minister, alongside the presentation of several awards related to sustainable urban development and town planning.
The Malaysia Smart City Rating is an initiative by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), through PLANMalaysia, based on the MS ISO 37122:2019 (Smart City Indicators) standard to assess the implementation of smart city initiatives by local authorities.
