SERI ISKANDAR: The Black Soldier Fly (BSF) pilot project is believed to be able to help sustainably manage food waste.

This project is implemented through funding from the Geran Pemangkin Bandar Rendah Karbon (GeRAK) under the Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA).

The chairman of the Housing and Local Government Committee, Sandrea Ng Shy Ching visited the Pusat Operasi Pekerja Seri Iskandar (POPSI) Majlis Daerah Perak Tengah here to see the implementation of the pilot project.

Sandrea said, apart from the recommendation that people avoid food waste and participate in the Food Bank initiative, the state government is also always trying to find other solutions for food waste management.

“Recently, I visited the Central Perak District Council’s POPSI to see the pilot project of the BSF or black soldier flies.

“The fly larvae of this species are used to dispose of food waste in a sustainable manner by helping to reduce the disposal of food waste to landfills, further reducing the release of carbon dioxide.

“When the larvae turn into pre-pupae, they can be used as an alternative food source for farm animals such as chickens and fish,” she said.

She said that the Petronas University of Technology (UTP) was also involved as a strategic partner.

“If everything goes well, the government will continue to expand to more Local Authorities (PBT) in collaboration with more government institutions and food premises,” she said.
