The Ipoh Cardiovascular Society Presents: Ipoh Heart Run

By Lam Yat Yee

Ipoh Heart Run, organised by the Ipoh Cardiovascular Society, Perak AED Save A Life Society and Kelab Roadrunners Ipoh (Roadrunners Club Ipoh), will take place on the 20th of August, from 7 AM, at Seri Botani International School Ipoh. The run is arranged by Organising Chairman Dr. Ng Theng Chun with the support of the three aforementioned NGOs (Non-Government Organisations).

The 5KM run is split into 7 categories by age.

  1. Mens’ Open Category (18 years – 39 years)
  2. Ladies’ Open Category (18 years – 45 years)
  3. Mens’ Veteran Category (40 years – 49 years)
  4. Ladies’ Veteran Category (45 years and above)
  5. Mens’ Senior Veteran Category (50 years and above)
  6. Mens’ Teen Category (12 years – 17 years)
  7. Women’s Teen Category (12 years to 17 years)

Registration costs RM60, and be sure to sign up soon if this interests you, as registration closes on the 15th of July. However, for the first 200 early birds, registration will only cost RM50. Participants will receive a T-Shirt upon registration, and awarded a “Finisher Medal” upon completion of the run.

And of course, prizes will be awarded to the finalists of each category!

The fee is perfectly reasonable as one of the event’s three big aims is to fund the purchase of 10 AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) devices for public use to be situated in certain strategic locations such as public parks and such (bear in mind, the purchasing and maintenance of these devices cost roughly 10K each).

Besides that, the organisers also hope to be able to raise sufficient funds to organise more Basic Life Support classes for the public. This includes learning how to perform basic CPR, and how to operate an AED device.

Lastly, this event also serves as a means to raise public awareness on cardiovascular diseases.

Following the run, several side programmes will take place, including a CPR and AED Awareness Exhibition, CPR performance class, an AED operation class, Government Agency exhibition, and free health tests.

Not a runner? No worries! It is encouraged for any eager person to join so long as their physical condition allows, as running, jogging, or even walking is, after all, beneficial to cardiovascular health.

Representatives organising the run alongside Organizing Chairman Dr. Ng Theng Chun are; Voon Yeow Hing (Organizing Secretary), Richard Liew Yew Hooi (Organizing Treasurer), Chong Him Shoong (Event Chairman), Dr. Elangovan a/l Subbiah (Perak Representative of AED Save A Life Society). Dr. Foong Yi Kwan (Representative of Ipoh Cardiovascular Society), Dr. Hasral Noor Hasni (Representative of Ipoh Cardiovascular Society), and Alice Chin (Representative of Ipoh Roadrunners Club).

The Ipoh Heart Run is also supported by MBI (Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh), Seri Botani International School, and several members of the Perak State Legislative Assembly. Additionally, the event is also sponsored by several private companies such as Power Root Marketing Sdn. Bhd. and etc.
