TAIPING: A rare historical artifact, believed to be a colonial-era railway milestone, has been discovered by an independent group of history researchers from the Malaya Historical Group (MHG).
The discovery was made during a research expedition in the Simpang area of Taiping, led by MHG chairman and founder, Shaharom Ahmad.

The historical milestone was found abandoned among piles of construction materials and building debris.
It is believed to have been used by the Federated Malay States Railways (FMSR) before the World War II era, before such markers were replaced with metal poles.
Although seemingly a small find, Shaharom emphasized its importance in tracing the lineage of the nation’s railway history.
“After discussions with several colleagues, we confirmed that the stone is a ‘Railway Milestone Marker’, believed to have been installed during the British-era double track railway construction project.
“We have taken follow-up action by contacting the relevant agencies to ensure the milestone is relocated to a safe and suitable location for public display.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the Matang Museum for their swift action in rescuing this important artifact,” he said.

Shaharom noted that discoveries like this are crucial in preserving the history of the country’s transportation system, especially the railway, which once played a significant role in the economic development of Malaya.
The railway milestone, or distance marker, is a relic from the British colonial period and was used to indicate distances along railway lines.
It not only served as a navigation and maintenance guide for railway staff, but also stands as a silent witness to the development of Malaya’s transportation system—particularly in the transport of tin and rubber in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The discovery of this pair of milestone markers will add another valuable treasure to the Matang Museum’s collection, offering the younger generation a chance to appreciate the history of the national rail system.
