This morning saw the grand opening of Timah Portrait, a travel photography studio, under Timah Explorer right in the heart of Old Town, at the 22 Hale Street Heritage Gallery.

The brainchild of Puan Sri Dato’ Sandra Lee, Anita Phang and Kingsley Ting, passionate individuals who believe that Ipoh has a unique character that deserves to be experienced, and not just visited. Timah Portrait is one of the first ways to bring that idea to life. It isn’t just a place for people to take photos but a space for people to step into a bygone era, try on a different story, enjoy themselves and leave with memories that truly reflect the spirit of Ipoh, from heritage inspired looks and colonial styles, every detail’s created with great care.

Through Timah Explorer, guests are guided to discover hidden gems and stories that define Ipoh’s identity, from its architectural heritage to the people who keep its traditions alive. Meanwhile, Timah Portrait transforms this journey into a deeply personal experience. Inside its thoughtfully designed photography studio, visitors can dress in a range of heritage and thematic costumes, from traditional Chinese qipao and samfu to Malay kebaya, colonial-era attire, or even miner-inspired outfits that reflect Ipoh’s tin mining legacy. There are also modern travel and contemporary looks for those who wish to blend nostalgia with style. Every portrait tells a story, not just of the person, but of the place itself.

What sets Timah Heritage apart is its commitment to cultural engagement and community creativity. Beyond photography, the company hosts interactive workshops, art programs and heritage-inspired events that bring together locals, artisans and travelers. Popular sessions include pottery making, lion dance craft and mask art, and tea appreciation workshops that highlight the artistry and traditions passed down through generations. Each program is designed to inspire discovery, creativity, and connection; nurturing a deeper appreciation for Ipoh’s cultural landscape while keeping its living heritage alive for the future.

Guests of honor were conveyed to the studio in vintage-style as they drove to the location via a parade of classic cars. Guests included Chairman of the Perak State Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee, YB Loh Sze Yee, Dato’ Ting Sing Yiew, Datin Hew Choi Yoke, Tan Sri Chang Ko Youn, Puan Sri Chang Ko Youn, Tan Sri Lee Oi Hian and Dato’ Gan Tack Kong.

Puan Seri Sandra Lee, one of the visionaries behind this endeavor, stated that through her work with Think City on the regeneration of Ipoh Old Town, she learned that cities don’t grow stronger just because of new buildings. And that it was through guidance from his Royal Highness, the Sultan of Perak, that she was encouraged to work on initiatives that help promote Ipoh’s culture and heritage in meaningful ways.

She further expressed her hope to continue working closely with the state government, particularly under the leadership of YB Loh Sze Yee, to support future initiatives led by Think City and KLK, as they aim to rejuvenate Old Town and Kinta River, in a sustainable way.

YB Loh Sze Yee, congratulated the team behind Timah Portrait, stating that it is always encouraging to see local initiatives that are driven by passion, with respect for heritage. He stated that as the Perak state government continues to strengthen tourism in the state, they believe that tourism today must go beyond simply visiting locations. More and more, visitors are looking for experiences that allow them to connect emotionally with a destination, understand its story and leave with memories that feel personal and authentic. In this context, Timah Portrait represents a creative and thoughtful tourism offering.

With that, the ribbon ceremony was conducted, followed by a fashion show that showcased the diverse cultural styles of all the peoples of Malaysia. And put on full display, the beauty of heritage and tradition, in front of a contemporary audience.

The event was supported by STG, who provided the refreshments, Mr. Tan Kai Lek, who provided handcrafted Chinese signage, Hor Yan Ho, Chang Jiang White Coffee and Dato’ Gan, who provided the goodies for the door gift, as well as adVirtus Creative Works, who collaborated with Timah Explorers for a video presentation.
