MBI notes safety concerns at SJKT Kerajaan, to carry out upgrading works

IPOH: The Ipoh City Council (MBI) has taken note of a report by Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic yesterday regarding student safety issues outside Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Tamil (SJKT) Kerajaan in Buntong.

In a statement today, MBI said it is in the process of appointing a contractor to carry out safety improvement works at the location.

The works will involve raising the existing speed bumps that have subsided and installing transverse bars (also known as rumble strips) to slow down vehicles.

“For information, MBI installed additional solar flashing lights in the school area last year.

“This measure was taken to ensure road users are more alert and reduce their speed when passing through the school zone, thereby enhancing the safety of students and the public.

“MBI is committed to expediting the implementation of the works once the contractor appointment process is finalised. The cooperation and concern of all parties are greatly appreciated for the sake of public safety,” the statement said.

Yesterday, Ipoh Echo/Peraktastic reported that the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) chairman of SJKT Kerajaan, Jeyaseelan Raju, had expressed serious concern over the safety of students not only at the school but also at two nearby schools — SMK Seri Puteri and SMK Sungai Pari.

He claimed that accidents have occurred repeatedly in front of the school in Buntong due to many motorists failing to slow down despite being in a school zone.

He added that the speed bumps in the area, particularly at SJKT Kerajaan and near the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple, had become level with the road following previous resurfacing works.
