The 12th International Day of Yoga Brought Community Together

The 12th International Day of Yoga, a free community event, was held at the Kinta Valley Retreat on 21 June.

Organised under the theme “Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom and World Peace,” the three-hour programme featured four speakers and facilitators who shared professional insights and practical pathways regarding physical, mental and emotional health.

The four guest facilitators were Dr. Ooi Bean Heng, Ms. Yeoh Chai Yen, Yoga Master Mandira and BK Kiruba Muthusamy.

Dr Ooi Hean Beng, who has a PhD in Science Education and is Chairman of the Buddhist Missionary Society Malaysia (BMSM), Perak Branch, presented on “Wisdom” through the eyes of Buddhism, understanding the effect of desires, the benefits of practicing equanimity in life and how the practice of meditation is not limited to just sitting in a meditation pose.

Ms. Yeoh Chai Yen, a registered dietitian and Certified Diabetes Lifestyle Advocate under the Malaysian Endocrine and Metabolic Society (MEMS), presented on “Wellness”, in regards to healthy aging. She spoke on the importance of preserving muscle, the importance of hydration, Vitamin B12 and other aspects as we age.

Master Mandira from Sai Yog Mandala, an M.A. of Yoga and Naturopathy as well as a Certified Yoga Master from Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (Ministry of AYUSH, India), ran two 5-min wellness intervals between each talk and also gave a 30-min presentation on the importance of natural health practices including five daily practices to keep our bodies feeling young and minds sharp till old age.

BK Kiruba Muthusamy, a Registered Community Pharmacist, is a certified Results Coach and Raja Yoga Meditation Teacher for over 30 years, who presented on “World Peace” and the responsibility of being at peace and loving to the self first, in order to to enable us to extend true love and peace to those around us and the world.

Participants found the programme to be both illuminating and informative.
