He is a mixed-race minority from Malaysia and lived in Ipoh for seven years. You can’t stop the rain
But you can choose whether
to get wet or take shelter
or curse the struggle with the umbrella
that most inefficient of inventions
like that printer that eats your thesis
that elevator that is always out-of-service
that train that is always delayed
that constant, needy waiting
for someone to show up
for the weather to change
for the season to act like itself
for the yearning of a feel-good day
for the surprise of a rainbow
for the sun to shine through
for things to work like they should
for traffic that doesn’t suck
for the open road
for getting from point A to B
without jams, detours, breakdowns
or just the consolation of a rest-stop
with a great cup of coffee to uplift
the heavy clouds freighted in your heart
put lightning in the pen and hope
the incoming storm inside you
landfalls on the page
without any loss
of life
