IPOH: Waste normally sent to landfills can now be turned into energy, with methane gas produced from organic waste used to generate electricity at the 2-megawatt (MW) Renewable Energy Biogas Plant in Lahat.

Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the project was more than just an energy plant, describing it as a symbol of the shift towards a more circular economy.
He said organic waste decomposing in landfills produces methane gas, which needs proper management while also offering an opportunity to generate energy.
“At Lahat, the gas is collected and used to generate electricity, while also helping to manage gas produced at the landfill,” he said when launching the plant today.
Saarani said the success of the project should not be measured solely by its 2MW capacity, but also by the actual amount of energy generated, gas management, safety and operational sustainability.
He said the Lahat experience could open up opportunities for Perak to explore other renewable energy sources, including solar, biogas and biomass, based on the suitability of each location.
He said every project should first be assessed based on available resources, supply continuity, suitable technology, costs and operational capabilities.
“Let us not pursue green projects simply because a particular technology is trending. We should choose projects that suit the conditions of each location and are capable of delivering results,” he said.
Saarani also urged the Ipoh City Council (MBI) and the operator to continue monitoring odour, cleanliness, truck movements, noise and operational safety for the benefit of nearby residents.
He also hoped the project would benefit the local community through employment and training opportunities, while allowing students to see first-hand how landfill gas can be converted into energy.
Saarani said the Lahat experience should serve as a guide for future renewable energy projects, in line with the Perak Sejahtera 2030 agenda, which emphasises environmental sustainability and more efficient use of resources.
