Urban Farming Community Receives Appreciation

The people’s effort in making the urban garden project a success has received appreciation from the Ipoh City Council (MBI), Perak State Agricultural Development Corporation (Perak SADC) and State Agriculture Department.

They were honoured as winners of the Urban Farming Community Competition at the Perak SADC Agrofest Masoorat Heritage Park @ Ipoh programme held at the Matsoorat Cave last night.

A total of four categories were contested, namely Urban Farming SADC Community, Urban Farming MBI Community, Urban Farming State Agriculture Department Community and Individual Open.

Each category offered cash prizes of RM3,000 for first place, RM2,000 for second place and RM1,000 for third place, together with certificates of appreciation.

The prizes were presented by Mayor, Dato’ Rumaizi Baharin and Chief Executive Officer of Perak SADC, Yahanis Yahya.

It was reported last year that MBI was pioneering the urban farming project and urban garden project in an integrated manner via involvement of the local community to further encourage agricultural activities. It is also hoped to provide an independent source of food.

The concept of urban farming was brought to light during the outbreak of COVID-19 due to the lack of import and export movements of raw ingredients which caused a shortage of food.

Rumaizi at the time stated that the concept was already implemented in cities of developed nations like Taiwan and it could be carried out here as it is not difficult to handle.

According to him, the implementation of guidelines can further increase community farming activities in the city in line with the national-level Urban Community Farming Policy introduced by the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) on August 3 last year.
