Extraordinary ‘Ala Kampung’ Ramadan at Excelsior Hotel

“It may look ordinary now, but next month it will be extraordinary,” is the promise of Chef Ismail Nawai among other chefs who have come together to prepare meals in conjunction with Ramadan at Excelsior Hotel, Ipoh, in April.

Continuing the legacy of his Opah (grandmother), Chef Ismail will be using his 27 years of culinary experience to recreate dishes inspired by his grandmother’s recipes.

“The theme ‘ala kampung’ definitely suits the tastes of all ages, especially those who miss home-cooked food by their parents in the village.

“Among the favourites available to try are Gulai Kawah, Rendang Tok Pak Kucai, Sambal Udang Petai, Cucur Udang Pak Kucai, various types of kerabu, traditional kuih muih and many more.

“Another feature that we are bringing to this Ramadan are some popular dishes of the Chinese community such as Butter Prawn, Steamed Fish, Ikan Tiga Rasa and Chicken Rice,” he told the media during the Ramadan Food Preview, Jom Berbuka Ala Kampung Excelsior programme yesterday (March 29).

Iftar Ramadan, which will run from April 7 to May 2, will be held at the Excelsior Ballroom Level 13A, which can accommodate approximately 380 people at a time.

Chef Ismail said visitors must also try the Cucur Udang Pak Kucai prepared by Chef Kusairi.

“I can honestly say that this is the best shrimp curry in Ipoh that will be served every day.

“Other menus such as satay and roasted lamb will be served on Fridays and Saturdays only, while on Wednesday, Chinese dishes will be prepared by Chef Leong.

“To bring some variety, except for the main menu set, one gets to taste different dishes every day. For example, there will be a rotation of Mee Rebus, Laksa, Soto and Bakso (meatballs) at the noodle stalls,” he said.

The price for adults is RM70.00, while the price for senior citizens 60 years and above is RM65.00 and children six to 12 years is RM60.00.

However, for early bird bookings, the special price is RM65.00. Reservations can be made by calling 018-2054690 (Mariana), 012- 5377880 (Jeriner) or 016 5269109 (Jeeva).
