Tan Sri Dato’ Seri V. David Jeyaratnam, now 99 years young, has lived a life full of resilience and dedication. His life journey tells the story of a man who has not only witnessed the evolution of his beloved city but has also played an integral role in shaping it.
Born and raised in the beautiful city of Ipoh, Tan Sri Jeyaratnam’s early years were marked by a sense of adventure and curiosity. Growing up amidst the rich cultural diversity of Ipoh, he enjoyed camping and scouting, fostering friendships that transcended racial and cultural boundaries. His charm, elegance and impeccable taste for fine clothes earned him a reputation as one of Ipoh’s most distinguished personalities.
Despite his connections with the city’s elite, Tan Sri Jeyaratnam remained grounded and empathetic, always moved by the suffering of others. This sense of compassion became the cornerstone of his life’s work, driving him to use his influence and resources to make meaningful changes in his community and beyond.
Tan Sri Jeyaratnam’s career as a criminal lawyer is nothing short of illustrious. Known as one of the top criminal lawyers in Malaysia, his courtroom victories, including the legendary Chai Kang trial, brought him national recognition. Yet, beyond his legal prowess, it was his dedication to justice and his advocacy for the underprivileged that truly set him apart.
Serving as Chairman of the Perak Bar Committee and President of the Perak Consumers Association, he championed consumer rights and legal justice. His leadership in these roles mirrored his commitment to serving the community and upholding the law with integrity and compassion.
Perhaps one of the most transformative periods in Tan Sri Jeyaratnam’s life was his tenure with the Perak Turf Club. He served as a committee member for 14 years before becoming Chairman in 1982. His leadership, which spanned until 2017, marked him as the longest-serving Chairman of any turf club in Malaysia.
Under his stewardship, the Perak Turf Club became a hotspot of charitable activity, raising significant funds for various causes, including the Yayasan Sultan Idris Shah. His efforts not only brought financial support to those in need but also helped promote Ipoh as a vibrant and progressive city, attracting tourists and fostering community spirit.
In 1982, driven by his passion for philanthropy, Tan Sri Jeyaratnam founded the Yayasan Sultan Idris Shah Foundation (YSIS). This institution, dedicated to the rehabilitation of persons with disabilities, has become a cornerstone of hope and empowerment for the disabled community in Malaysia. His vision for YSIS was clear: to provide mobility and independence for those confined by their disabilities and to offer a supportive environment where they could thrive. The foundation’s success is evidence of his unwavering commitment to uplifting others and making a lasting impact on the community.
