Ipoh – The My Save Food @ Bazar Ramadan PUO programme has successfully reduced food waste while providing free iftar meals to underprivileged students.
Organised by Pemuda Gema in collaboration with the Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) Student Representative Council (JPP), the three-day programme, held from March 4 to 6, 2025, aimed to raise awareness among traders and students about responsible food management during Ramadan.
Unsold food and beverages from the Ramadan bazaar were collected in two sessions before being distributed to students, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds.
On the first day, 8.34kg of food and 8.6kg of beverages were collected. By the second day, excess food had decreased to 2.53kg and 3.1kg of beverages, reflecting increased awareness among traders about minimising wastage.
According to JPP PUO President Muhd Bazli, the initiative not only benefited students in need but also fostered a sense of social responsibility in the community.
“I saw the joy on the faces of students receiving meals from this programme. It not only reduces food waste but also raises awareness among traders about proper food management and bazaar cleanliness,” he said.
As a token of appreciation, JPP PUO also presented a certificate of recognition to Pemuda Gema for their collaboration in making the programme a success.
Organisers hope the initiative will continue in the future to further reduce food waste and extend assistance to more students.
