Tamil School Celebrates Culture and Language through Muthamil Festival

By Owen Lee

A colourful display of culture, language, and tradition took centre stage at SJK(T) Kerajaan last weekend, as the school hosted its annual Muthamil Festival, bringing together students and teachers for a meaningful celebration.

The festival was organised by the Tamilar Association of Thirunal Perak and involved around 700 students and teachers. At the same time, 55 other Tamil schools across Perak also held their own celebrations in conjunction with the festival.

The Muthamil Festival was a vibrant showcase of student talent and Tamil heritage. With a full-day programme of storytelling, cultural drama, traditional dance, and Indian cultural games, the event aimed to instill pride and awareness of Tamil identity among the younger generation.

M. Mathialagan, 74, the Organising Chairman of the festival, stated, “We organise this annual event to emphasise the Tamil language and its culture to the younger generation.” He added that language can bring people together and hopes to inspire unity, understanding, and the spirit to achieve great things.

Students participated in cultural dance performances, drama, storytelling competitions, and singing contests, while teachers took to the stage for traditional storytelling and public speaking sessions. One of the main highlights was the traditional games corner, where both students and teachers competed in games like Pallanguzhi, laughing and bonding through these age-old pastimes.

The Muthamil Festival not only celebrated language and the arts but also reminded everyone of the importance of preserving cultural identity in a modern world. It was a day of cultural pride and togetherness for the Tamil community
