SMCI Performs Perak’s First Endoscopic Ultrasound Procedure

By: Rosli Mansor Ahmad Razali

IPOH: In a significant breakthrough for advanced gastrointestinal diagnostics in Perak, Sunway Medical Centre Ipoh (SMCI) has successfully performed its first Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) procedure with Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA).

The procedure was led by SMCI’s Consultant Physician, Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, Dr Khairul Najmi Muhammad Nawawi, alongside his supporting team. This milestone marks the first time such a procedure has been completed in the state.

EUS is a cutting-edge technique that combines endoscopy and ultrasound to produce high-resolution images of the digestive tract and surrounding organs.

It plays a critical role in assessing pancreatic lesions and cysts, bile duct abnormalities and stones, as well as submucosal growths in the stomach.

Additionally, EUS enables guided tissue sampling with enhanced accuracy, facilitating the early detection and diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases.

“This marks a major advancement in providing the local community with access to minimally invasive, high-precision diagnostic tools,” SMCI said in a statement.
