By Julian Matthews
i am glad i don’t have a nut allergy
in fact, i may have the opposite—
an affinity to nuttiness, and all the crazies
that comes with it. lord knows, i’ve had
to live with it, to confront it, to wrestle
with its restlessness, its drama,
its melancholia, its ups and downs.
i’ve unjammed it, twisted and uncapped it,
knifed its Bingham plastic form, slapped it on
generously, spread it, rolled with it,
swallowed hard and digested it.
i’ve eaten it up and, in turn, let it eat me up,
then picked up the crumbs of my sanity
from the floor and moved on.
and here we are—out of bread again.
First published in the literary journal Masticadores Canada.
