Senior Citizens Encouraged to Undergo Annual Hearing Screenings

By Rosli Mansor

IPOH: Malaysians aged 60 and above are encouraged to undergo annual hearing screenings for early detection and timely treatment of hearing loss.

In conjunction with World Hearing and Speech Awareness Month this May, the Lions Club of Ipoh Evergreen, in collaboration with Pure Sound Tech Enterprise and main sponsor Swiss Medicare Sdn Bhd, will donate hearing aids to underprivileged individuals in Perak.

A total of 12 Phonak hearing aids, worth RM82,000, will be distributed to selected recipients.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), by 2050, an estimated 700 million people, roughly one in ten globally, will experience hearing loss greater than 35 decibels and require intervention.

Additionally, four in every 1,000 babies are born with some degree of hearing impairment.

In Malaysia, noise-induced hearing loss in the workplace remains the most prevalent occupational disease, based on statistics from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) in 2021.

A handover ceremony will be held on May 4 at the Lions Centre, AEON Big Falim, Ipoh, where experts from Pure Sound Tech Enterprise will also conduct on-site fittings of the hearing aids.

For more information, members of the public may contact Lion Wendy Kan at 012-5128291, Doreen Wong at 011-20886963 or Lion Cecilia Loke at 012-5207082.
