Domestic Violence Cases Rise but Many Victims Still Fear Speaking Out

By Aida Aziz

IPOH: The increase in domestic violence cases in the state indicates that more women are bravely coming forward to report to the authorities.

According to statistics from the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), a total of 842 cases were reported in 2024, and 425 cases were recorded in the first four months of 2025.

However, according to the relevant State Executive Councillor, Datuk Salbiah Mohamed, many victims remain trapped in the cycle of abuse due to fear and shame.

“The issue and reality of violence against women is a serious violation of human rights.

“Efforts are being intensified to empower various NGOs and community service centres so they can function as the frontline in assisting and protecting victims in cases of violence against women,” she said.

She added that the state government is committed to strengthening the support ecosystem for women and families through a community-based approach and cross-agency collaboration.

“On the ground, the Social Welfare Department, through its protection officers, works closely with relevant agencies such as PDRM, the Department of Women’s Development (JPW), LPPKN, hospitals, and NGOs.

“This is to ensure immediate action, temporary protection, and psychosocial assistance can be provided to victims. The State Assemblyman’s Office is also not excluded and can offer initial support and refer such cases to the relevant agencies,” she said.
