‘The Museum Comes to You’ at Taiping Community College

TAIPING: Traditional games such as batu seremban, tuju tin, and capteh (shuttlecock kicking) may sound unfamiliar to the younger generation today.

However, it should be noted that these games were once very popular and were favourite pastimes during leisure hours.

These were among the highlights of the Taiping Heritage Town Exhibition organised by the Library Unit and General Studies Unit of Taiping Community College (KKT) in collaboration with the Perak Museum.

Adopting the concept of ‘The Museum Comes to You’, this one-day exhibition provided students and college staff with the opportunity to learn about Taiping’s history in a more accessible, relaxed, and interactive way within their own learning environment.

According to KKT Director Anuar Ab Azid, this inaugural exhibition showcased Taiping’s history as a heritage town rich in historical value, culture, and identity.

“It aims to raise awareness among the college community, including more than 100 students here, of the importance of understanding and appreciating local history.

“The Perak Museum prepared exhibition panels related to Taiping’s history, accompanied by interactive quiz activities, while also encouraging active student participation in a fun learning atmosphere.

“Visitors also had the opportunity to take part in traditional games such as capteh, tuju tin, and batu seremban, which were introduced as part of the cultural heritage of past communities.

“These activities not only enlivened the atmosphere but also fostered values of togetherness, inclusivity, and mutual respect among students,” he said here today.

A collection of historical artefacts on display provided a clearer picture of life and the early development of the town of Taiping, helping students to understand history through real-life experiences.

The organisation of this exhibition is in line with KKT’s role as a TVET institution that not only emphasises skills development but also nurtures historical awareness, cultural values, and social responsibility among students and the wider institutional community.
