IPOH: After two years of implementation, efforts to reduce stray animals at the source are finally showing encouraging results.
More pet owners are now inquiring early and registering to participate in the subsidised sterilisation programme.

According to Perak Exco Sandrea Ng, the programme was completed in Ipoh in March, successfully sterilising 203 cats and dogs.
“Since its introduction in 2024, this approach has focused on reducing stray animals at the source. Besides helping sterilise strays, pet owners are also encouraged to sterilise their own pets with government subsidies.
“This is because the rise in stray animals often originates from unsterilised pets, which reproduce and eventually end up abandoned in the community.
“Without control from the outset, the number of strays will continue to increase, making management efforts more challenging.

Therefore, sterilisation of owned pets remains a primary focus of this programme,” she said.
She added that while there were previously many questions, more pet owners are now asking early and registering to take part in the programme.
The initiative has also been supported through collaboration with Friends of Pawsitive, task forces, veterinarians, and participating pet owners.
“These ongoing efforts help raise awareness about responsible pet ownership.
“The subsidised sterilisation programme is also planned to expand to more districts this year, with several arrangements being finalised.
“This journey requires time and continuous collaboration. We will continue moving forward with the hope of bringing meaningful change to all parties involved,” she said.
