PADANG RENGAS: A man was detained after he was allegedly caught attempting to steal approximately 43 metres of cable belonging to Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) at KM95.75 along the Padang Rengas-Kamunting sector on Tuesday.
The suspect was apprehended by auxiliary police personnel from the Taiping branch who were conducting routine crime-prevention patrols in an area identified as a high-risk location for cable theft.
According to a statement issued by KTMB, the incident disrupted the signalling system and rail operations in the affected area.
“Inspections at the scene led to the discovery and seizure of cables believed to belong to KTMB’s Signalling Department.
“Further examination by the department confirmed that approximately 43 metres of cable had been cut.
“This cable theft not only caused material losses but also had the potential to jeopardise train operations and disrupt rail services for passengers,” the statement said.
The suspect was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation and action.
KTMB said security patrols would continue to be intensified through integrated cooperation between its auxiliary police force and the relevant authorities to curb criminal activities that could threaten train operations and public safety.
Members of the public with information on suspicious activities near railway tracks are urged to contact the KTMB Auxiliary Police Information Collection and Dissemination Centre at 03-2263 1194, which operates 24 hours a day, or notify the police.
