IPOH: Three sets of twins and seven students with disabilities (OKU) were among the highlights of the registration of 2,182 new students at Politeknik Ungku Omar (PUO) for the Session I 2026/2027 intake.

The intake reflects continued public confidence in the quality of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) offered by PUO, while also showcasing the diverse backgrounds of students who have chosen the institution.

PUO Director Dr Hajah Salmi Che Meh said the intake reflects strong public trust in the institution’s role in producing highly skilled TVET graduates who meet current industry demands.

“Welcome to PUO, Home of TVET Champions. We are proud to receive 2,182 new students who will become part of the PUO family,” she said.

She added that the new students will be pursuing studies across 18 programmes covering engineering, information technology, business, architecture, geomatics and marine-related fields.

She said the registration took place on June 20 and 21 at the PUO campus, with students accompanied by parents and guardians from across the country.

“The campus atmosphere was lively with the assistance of volunteers and staff who helped ensure the smooth running of the registration process,” she said.

Among those who drew attention were three sets of twins, namely Nur Fatin Shazana and Muhammad Aqil Taqiuddin Mohd Fadzil from Manong, Perak; Varshaan and Varmhan Rames from Taiping; and Sharacaniswarran and Shanmugiswaran Balu from Rawang, Selangor.

Also among the intake were seven students with disabilities, reflecting PUO’s commitment to inclusive education for all segments of society.

Established in 1969, PUO is Malaysia’s first polytechnic and is currently designated as a Premier Polytechnic as well as an APEX Polytechnic. The institution also recorded notable achievements, including being crowned overall champion of MALPTAAC-17 for the eighth time.
