Ipoh Teacher Retires After 49 Years at One School

By Anne Das

Forty-nine years. One school. One remarkable teacher.

On 3 July 2026, the new auditorium at Wesley Methodist School Ipoh was filled to capacity as students, alumni, colleagues, board members and guests gathered to honour Maria Phohminal A/P S. Manickam, known to generations as Madam Philo.

After 49 years in the classroom, Madam Philo was saying goodbye to the school that had shaped almost her entire working life.

She joined Methodist High School Ipoh in August 1977 after completing her teacher training at the University of Madras. She remained with the same institution through its transition to Wesley Methodist School Ipoh, making her one of the school’s longest-serving educators.

Across nearly five decades, she taught Chemistry, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics. They were demanding subjects, and she taught them with the discipline they required.

Her students knew the rules. Homework had to be completed. Lessons were to be taken seriously. Effort mattered. In her classroom, excuses had little currency.

In an interview with Ipoh Echo, Madam Philo said the relationship between teachers and students remained central to her work throughout the years.

“When teachers care for the students, they show more interest in learning,” she said. “Teaching is a noble profession, and I truly enjoyed it until my final day in the classroom.”

Principal Madam Tan Lee Wah described Madam Philo as a consistent and diligent teacher who expected the same standards from her students because she practised them herself.

“She led by example,” she said.

Madam Tan also spoke of Madam Philo’s simple way of life and remarkable attendance record. A vegetarian who lived without fuss, she rarely took leave during her long career, apart from maternity leave after the birth of her daughter.

Representing the Board of Governors, Dato’ Chin Lean Keat paid tribute to that extraordinary commitment.

He noted that Madam Philo had travelled to and from Batu Gajah every day for almost five decades, inspiring both students and teachers through her dedication. He thanked her for her dedication and for always striving for the best, for her students.

The tribute from former students carried a different kind of weight. Eswaran Shaker, an alumnus from the Class of 2016, said Madam Philo had walked “the path of a nurturer and a teacher” and had made an impact on those she taught.

Asked how she hopes to be remembered, she said she hopes her students remember her as a teacher who cared enough to guide them, encourage them and help them become better people.

The celebration continued with the presentation of gifts and a blessing ceremony, as the school community sent Madam Philo into retirement with gratitude and warm wishes.

Retirement now brings a different pace of life.

She hopes to spend more time in church activities, go on pilgrimages and visit places of historical interest. She also plans to spend time with her younger sister in India and her daughter, Vivian, in England.

After 49 years, Madam Philo leaves Wesley Methodist School Ipoh as one of its longest-serving and most respected teachers.

Her legacy lives on in the generations she taught, the colleagues she inspired and the respect that brought so many people together to honour her.

“The faces changed with every generation, but the joy of teaching never did.” – Madam Philo
