Flash Floods on Jalan Gopeng: Road Users Urge JKR to Find Immediate Solution

By Zaki MS

IPOH: Dissatisfaction among road users is mounting over recurring flash floods along Jalan Gopeng towards Ipoh whenever heavy rain occurs.

Yesterday, areas near Lotus’s Pulai Heights, along the main route towards Simpang Pulai and around Taman Soon Choon were flooded, disrupting traffic flow.

The situation is believed to have been caused by a drainage system unable to fully cope with the volume of rainwater.

Road users also faced traffic congestion and delays as water accumulated along the main route.

Faliq Ziqri Fauzi said road users’ concerns were justified as the chronic flash flood problem along Jalan Gopeng continued to recur following heavy rain.

He said previous drainage widening works appeared to have failed to resolve the issue comprehensively.

Siti Nuraisyah Ilias questioned the long-term solution, saying it appeared to be taking too long to materialise.

She added that overlapping jurisdictions between the federal road under the Perak Public Works Department (JKR) and the city administration had also raised questions over project coordination.

Lee Jia Hui said every time heavy rain occurred, surface runoff caused severe congestion, disrupting journeys between Simpang Pulai and the city centre.

Meanwhile, Ramesh Kumar hoped the authorities would not rely solely on routine maintenance but instead implement more effective infrastructure solutions.

Physical supervision and daily maintenance of Jalan Gopeng within the Ipoh area fall under the responsibility of the Kinta District Public Works Department.

Road users hope the relevant agencies can improve coordination and expedite a solution to ensure that flash floods and traffic congestion along the route do not continue to recur.
