‘DIY Made Simple’ competition returns

Call for entries are now open

KUALA LUMPUR, 19 April 2023 — Great news to all secondary school students and teachers – the annual ‘DIY Made Simple’ competition returns.

Now in its eighth year, the 2024 edition of ‘DIY Made Simple’ is welcoming entries from secondary schools across Malaysia to participate. This year’s theme, ‘Wonder Waste Creations: Paper & Plastic Edition’ calls for students to find ways to improve their school facilities by incorporating methods to reuse, reduce, recycle, and upcycle waste materials, specifically using paper and plastics. Given that garbage or solid waste management is one of the main challenges faced by our country today, the competition strengthens its support for the government’s initiative to increase recycling rates to 40 percent by 2025, as stated in the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP).

Interested schools have until 9 May 2024 to submit their entries. A panel of judges comprising representatives from Universiti Malaya (UM), MR D.I.Y., and the Ministry of Education’s [MOE] will evaluate these submissions and shortlist sixteen schools.  The shortlisted schools will work on their projects with lecturers from UM’s Faculty of Built Environment to transform their ideas into reality between 5 June – 31 July 2024. The evaluation phase will take place in August 2024 where the school students will present their finalised projects to the judges, and the winners will be announced in a Grand Finale in the same month.

‘DIY Made Simple’ competition is jointly organised by Malaysia’s largest home improvement retailer, MR D.I.Y. Group (M) Bhd [MR D.I.Y.], and Universiti Malaya’s Community Engagement Centre [UMCares] and Faculty of Built Environment, with the support of the Ministry of Education’s [MOE] Sports, Co-Curriculum, and Arts Division.
