New OT & ICU Complex for KPJ Ipoh

The President & Managing Director of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, Dato’ Amiruddin Abdul Satar officially launched the new Operation Theatre (OT) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Complex of KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital recently.

The OT complex is made up of six operating theatres, four of which are Conventional OTs and the remainder two are state-of-the-art Modular OTs which are basically a finished steel structure with jointless sterile coating that prevents contamination build-up making it robust in nature. These OTs also utilise stainless steel automatic doors that make transfers of patients in and out quicker and safer. The doors maintain the pressure inside the OT as well as protects against fire, dust and radiation.

Laminar Airflow used in these theatres is designed to move particle free air over the aseptic operating field in one direction. It is usually combined with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that will remove particles >0.3 micron in diameter with an efficiency of 99.97%. These and other characteristics of the Modular OT make it the jewel in the crown of the services provided by the hospital and indeed distinguishes KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital from the rest of KPJ hospitals in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the newly completed ICU consists of 14 beds, each in its own room. Ten of these are regular ICU beds, two will be isolation facilities equipped with negative pressure and filtered ventilation system to the latest Ministry of Health requirement. The last two are earmarked for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds that will be the nucleus for a new Neonatal Unit. The reasons behind opting for individual rooms instead of an open ward configuration are to increase patients’ level of comfort and privacy as well as to limit the chances of infection occurring between patient to patient or between patient to visitor. Male and female toilets with shower facilities have also been installed in the ICU for mobile patients to use with or without assistance and for the convenience of visiting relatives.

All the beds are connected to a central monitoring system that allows patients’ Haemodynamic status to be viewed from the Nurses station as well as at each bedside monitor.

Unlike before, the new ICU is located near and have direct access to the Operating Theatre complex should the need for an ICU patient to undergo emergency surgery arise. There is a dedicated consultation room to accommodate a large number of family members to be inclusive in discussions with attending consultants with regards to patients admitted here. There is also a pantry to prepare special or additional dietary needs for patients and a small waiting room for visitors just outside. All in all, the new ICU provides a top notch environment for patients to rest and get treatment while having around the clock monitoring.

Present at the launch were the Deputy Chairman of KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, Tn Hj Ahmad Nasirruddin Harun, Executive Director of KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, Tn Hj Mohd Nasir Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer of KPJ Ipoh Specialist Hospital, Tn Hj Asmadi Mohd Bakri and the top management of KPJ Healthcare Berhad.
