Perak Dominated in Taekwon-Do Championship

A team comprising of total 26 players representing Perak participated in the National  Taekwon-Do (ITF) Championship 2016 held by First City University College from December 16-18, 2016.

The opening ceremony of this national event was officiated by Dato’ Seri Mohamed Azmin Bin Ali, the Chief Minister of Selangor.

Perak state players gave a highly impressive performance, dominating as the overall state champion throughout the events, and also seized both best male and best female awards in this championship. Perak state harvested a total of 27 medals, comprising eight golds, four silvers, and 15 bronzes. Among the total of eight golds, best male award winner Loo Wai Sing and best female award winner Vivian Tan won their own two golds in both individual pattern and sparring events. Poh Keng Chong who competed in male 4th Dan individual pattern, Goh Rui Min who took part in female 3rd Dan individual pattern, and Yong Chin Yip who participated in male 2nd Dan individual pattern achieved gold medals in their respective events. In addition, Perak male team comprising Poh Keng Chong, Loo Wai Sing, You Po Loon, Ooi Ling Foong and Liew Chan Siong displayed superb teamwork which delighted the crowd and they won another gold medal in the male team pattern event.

Four silvers were obtained by Yong Chin Yip in under 78kg male individual sparring, Liew Chan Siong in under 85kg male individual sparring, Perak Female team in team pattern, and male team in self-defence routine. Fifteen bronzes were won by several players in other events.

Taekwon-do prioritises perseverance and indomitable spirit, which teaches those who did not win to overcome their losses by persevering more in practising and learning from mistakes. They are taught that “A trophy will dust, memories and lessons do not, and instead will churn you into a stronger person”.

Perak state looks forward to the ITF World Championship which will be held in this coming September 2017 at Pyongyang, capital of North Korea.

The championship closed with a speech given by the Deputy President of International Taekwon-Do Federation Malaysia (ITFM), Master Azwan Khoo from Perak who expressed his pride in Perak state as well as fellow athletes from all over the country.
