Social Concerns’ Grocery Distribution

By SH Ong

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic which is causing great hardship and difficulties to the local populace, many NGOs and organizations are stepping forward to help quell this global crisis.

One of such organizations is the Social Concerns (SC) ministry of Canning Garden Methodist Church (CGMC) which was set up to help the poor and needy in the Canning Garden and surrounding areas. However, since the imposition of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in early 2020, their scope has expanded to include providing food rations as their main concern and to cover as wide an area as possible.

The SC initially distributed food rations such as sugar, salt, rice, flour, canned food, bihun (rice vermicelli), as well as sanitary items to the needy around the area. They have, since April 2020, been delivering food packs to places as far as Chemor for school children, differently-abled persons, people who are affected by the MCO, people who have lost their jobs, as well as foreign workers.

From January to May this year, they have delivered a total of 500 packs of food to some school children, as well as residents of Kampung Paloh, Kampung Simee, Buntong and Chemor.  Recently on July 3, 110 families from Kampung Simee, Buntong , Kampung Bengali, Kampung Pisang and Kampung Che Zainal were happy to receive their food packs from Social Concerns.

All of the above was made possible with the generous donations, contributions and volunteers of CGMC.
