State Government Looks Into Issue of Wandering Livestock

Following the recent fatal tragedies involving livestock left wandering on the road, a special committee will be established with the first committee meeting commencing next Monday.

Executive Councillor for Housing, Local Government and Tourism, Dato’ Nolee Ashilin binti Dato’ Mohammed Radzi said the government takes the issue of wandering farmed animals seriously. Without knowing who the owners are, it impedes any further action.

“The first meeting of the committee will be held next Monday. The meeting is to decide on who will chair the committee, either the Executive Councillor for Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industries, Razman Zakaria or I.

“The issue of wandering livestock is never-ending even though various methods and approaches have been taken by the state government. We will discuss the possible approaches including from the enforcement perspective and consult with animal owners as well as related agencies.

“The committee will be made up of related agencies such as the Department of Veterinary, Department of Agriculture, local authorities and district office. Via the by-laws, we can catch and impose compounds. Actions can be taken but unfortunately, when an incident occurs, we do not know who is the real owner of the animals,” she said during the media conference in conjunction with a work visit to Rokiah Kopitiam at Concubine Lane yesterday.

Present were Senior Director of Service, Rohayah Abdul Kadir and CEO of Tourism Perak, Nurmalis Musa.

She added that the Ipoh City Council (MBI), for example, can take enforcement action according to the Local Government Act 1976 involving by-laws on livestock licensing and wandering animals (Undang-Undang Kecil Pelesenan Haiwan Ternakan dan Haiwan Merayau (MBI) 2014).

“We hope that via this new committee, the issue of wandering livestock can be curbed and fatal accidents prevented,” she stated.
