KPDN raids counterfeit goods storage

IPOH: The Perak State enforcement team of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDN) successfully seized 1,500 units of suspected counterfeit goods such as shoes and sportswear sets bearing wrong registered trademarks.

The seizure was conducted by four teams consisting of 20 KPDN officers in a joint operation to combat the distribution and sale of counterfeit goods in the vicinity of Jalan Pasar, Parit Buntar, Perak.

Director of the Perak State Office of the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, Dato’ Kamalludin Ismail, stated that the estimated value of the seized items is RM83,000.00.

“Based on intelligence information, four premises suspected to be used as storage facilities for counterfeit goods were identified.

“The raid was carried out by the Perak State enforcement team of KPDN in collaboration with representatives of the registered trademark owners on May 31, 2023, around noon.

“Initial verification conducted by the representatives of the registered trademark owners confirmed that all the seized items were suspected to be counterfeit,” he said.

He added that the case will be investigated under the Trade Marks Act 2019, and if found guilty, corporate entities will be fined not exceeding RM15,000 for each item bearing the wrong registered trademark.

If individuals are involved and not corporate entities, they will be fined not exceeding RM10,000 for each item bearing the wrong registered trademark, imprisoned for a period not exceeding three years, or both.

“KPDN Perak reminds traders to be more responsible and respect the intellectual property of others. They also warn individuals and companies not to violate the law, especially regarding the sale and distribution of counterfeit goods to avoid severe penalties according to the law.

“The public is advised to provide information to the Ministry by reporting such activities through various channels such as WhatsApp at 019-279 4317 / 019-848 8000, the Complaints Portal: e-aduan.kpdn.gov.my, Call Centre 1-800-886-800, Email e-aduan@kpdn.gov.my and the Ez ADU KPDN mobile app,” he concluded.
