Gastronomy Tourism in Ipoh: Boosting the Local Economy

By: Zaki Salleh

IPOH: Gastronomy tourism, centered around food, is emerging as one of Ipoh’s key strengths, as the city sees a rising influx of tourists.

In light of this, the Ipoh City Council (MBI) is prioritizing efforts to maintain the city’s reputation by conducting regular inspections and monitoring of all food establishments licensed under its jurisdiction.

Ipoh Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin shared that, in 2024, a total of 982 food premises received Grade A certification out of 3,200 licensed establishments.

“This translates to 30% of the total premises achieving Grade A, with a target of increasing this figure to 50% by the end of the year,” he said.

The mayor emphasized the importance of this target in bolstering the local gastronomic economy in preparation for MBI’s Visit Malaysia 2026 programs.

“A Grade A rating assures cleanliness, safety, and quality of food. This not only enhances the city’s culinary industry but also attracts tourists from within and outside the country.

“Food business operators can progress alongside Ipoh’s development, aligning with the city’s goal to become the nation’s premier tourism hub by 2025,” he added.

He made these remarks during the opening ceremony of Feng Cha TLF Sdn Bhd restaurant at Canning Trade Centre.

Datuk Rumaizi further explained that the Grade A certification criteria consider the cleanliness of premises and restrooms, emphasizing the “Clean, Attractive, and Fragrant” (BMW) standard.

Additionally, establishments must provide essential documentation, such as anti-typhoid vaccination cards for all food handlers, proof of food handler training, grease trap installations, and pest control measures.

“The implementation of the BMW clean restroom policy will be a key requirement for renewing food business licenses starting in 2024, as recommended by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government,” he said.
