Ipoh Residential Assessment Tax Reduced to 7 Percent – Ipoh Mayor

IPOH: Ipoh Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin has assured that the Ipoh City Council (MBI) will carefully consider public feedback before finalizing any changes to the assessment tax rates.

Speaking at a press conference held in conjunction with the opening of Feng Cha restaurant in Canning 2 today, he said the council has made amendments, and the gazette was issued on December 26. There is a slight reduction, particularly for residential properties, with the rate dropping from 9 percent to 7 percent.

“However, the maximum allowable increase for assessment tax is 15 per cent. After review, some areas have seen reductions, while others with increases remain within the maximum threshold,” he explained.

He added that engagement sessions with stakeholders, including State Assembly members, Members of Parliament, council members, and resident representatives, will continue until March 15, 2025.

“Following these engagement sessions, we will present the proposals to the state government, which will ultimately decide on the final rates. However, the public’s views will be fully considered before any decision is made,” Rumaizi stated.

He encouraged residents to provide clear and rational feedback, noting that the final decision would impact all parties.

“Public input is crucial, and we are committed to ensuring that their feedback is conveyed to the state government so that a balanced decision can be reached.

“MBI previously faced objections from residents over increases in assessment tax. The decision to lower residential rates is seen as an effort to balance public welfare with the need to improve city services.

“The final decision on the new assessment tax rates is expected to be announced after a comprehensive review by the state government,” he said.
