IPOH: Despite numerous awareness campaigns and warnings about online scams, individuals continue to fall prey to such fraudulent schemes, often suffering significant financial losses.

In a recent case, a 32-year-old diving coach lost RM304,422 after being deceived by a fake investment scheme advertised on Facebook.

Acting Perak Police Chief, Deputy Commissioner Zulkafli Sariaat, said that Ipoh District Police received a report from the victim on Friday.

The incident began on September 11 last year, when the victim came across an investment advertisement for stock trading while browsing Facebook at home.

“The victim clicked on a link provided by a woman (the suspect) and was then added to a WhatsApp group, where she was instructed to download an online application,” he explained.

Subsequently, the victim made 14 money transfers totalling RM304,422 to two different bank accounts.

“Initial investigations revealed that on November 15, a return of RM7,960 was credited to the victim’s account.

However, when she attempted to contact the suspect for returns on her other transactions, the suspect was unresponsive.

“Upon checking various websites, the victim discovered that the investment was non-existent. The funds used for the investment came from her savings and loans from family and friends,” he added.

Police have urged the public to always verify the authenticity of information provided in investment schemes.
