Bubur Lambuk Unites Communities in Buntong

By Anne Das

Bubur Lambuk, a simple yet deeply symbolic dish, has long been associated with unity and generosity in Malaysia. Traditionally prepared and shared during Ramadan, this savory porridge represents the spirit of togetherness, where people from all walks of life come together to cook, serve, and enjoy.

In keeping with this tradition, the “Program Gerak Rahmah: Jom Masak Bubur Lambuk Perpaduan 2025” brought the same spirit of harmony to Buntong, demonstrating how food can bring people closer and strengthen community ties.

The Rumah Pangsa Taman Harmoni Buntong in Ipoh buzzed with activity as approximately 200 residents gathered for the event recently. Organized by Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT) in collaboration with Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh (MBI) and Persatuan Penduduk Taman Harmoni Buntong, the event celebrated unity through the communal cooking of Bubur Lambuk.

Clr. En Sivam Kalimuthu, Ahli Majlis Zon 7, officiated the event, which also received support with a RM1000 donation from the Datuk Bandar Ipoh. Beyond the local residents, communities from nearby Medan Permai Flats and Taman Pertama Flats joined, strengthening the event’s goal of bringing people from different backgrounds together.

“Unity is vital for us as Malaysians,” said Muhammad Faiz Abdullah, Chairman of the Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT) PPR Taman Harmoni Buntong. “Events like this remind us of our shared bonds, despite our different religions and backgrounds.”

This cooking event was held simultaneously across all Malaysian states, an initiative launched by the Ministry of National Unity to encourage social cohesion and strengthen the spirit of togetherness among communities.

Participants eagerly prepared the traditional porridge, working side by side in a display of teamwork and friendship among Malays, Indians, Chinese, and Sikhs alike.

The gathering at Taman Harmoni was a clear reminder that community spirit thrives when people come together for a common purpose. Cooking side by side, sharing a meal, and reconnecting with neighbours are sure ways of strengthening bonds.

After all, unity isn’t built on speeches, it’s stirred into the pot and shared at the table.
